How many eggs you collect depends on breed, feed, daylight and care. These are realistic planning figures for a well-kept flock in Kashmir, not guarantees.

Breeds we recommend
- Improved desi dual-purpose (e.g. Vanaraja, Gramapriya, Kuroiler types): hardy, forage well, lay tinted eggs
- Commercial brown layers: the most eggs per hen, best kept in DUB or ZOON
- Local desi hens: fewer eggs, but excellent mothers and very cold-tolerant
Keeping hens laying in winter
- Laying slows as days shorten; gentle supplementary light helps
- Dry, draught-free bedding matters more than heating
- Unfrozen water every morning — the frost-free drinker handles this
- Extra layer feed and grit through the cold months
Raising meat birds
Chicken tractors are ideal for pasture-raised meat birds: fresh grass every day, clean ground and a finished bird your customers can trust. Planning figures per tractor:

*Pasture season in the Kashmir valley runs roughly spring to late autumn. Brood chicks indoors for the first 2–3 weeks before moving them to the tractor.

Your orchard's hardest-working crew
Pairing chicken tractors with apple, walnut, cherry or high-density orchards turns the orchard floor into a second enterprise.

Questions we often get
Do I need a rooster for eggs?
No. Hens lay without a rooster. You only need one if you want fertile eggs to hatch chicks.
Will the coop smell?
A mobile tractor that moves daily barely smells, because droppings never build up in one spot. Fixed coops stay fresh with dry bedding and good high-level ventilation, which every ChickInCoop has.
How often do I move a chicken tractor?
Once a day is ideal on grass. It takes a couple of minutes: lift one end on the handles or wheels and roll it one length forward.
Will it survive a Kashmir winter?
Yes. The roofs are designed for valley snow, the structure is sealed marine plywood with a GI roof, and every coop is ground-anchored against wind. Above valley altitude (Gulmarg, Pahalgam) tell us and we will check the design for your site.
Can I keep chickens and a kitchen garden?
Yes, and they help each other. Use the tractor to clear and fertilise a bed before planting, then move it on before seedlings go in.
Do you deliver outside the Kashmir valley?
The coops ship flat-packed, so we can deliver across J&K, Ladakh and beyond. Message us with your location.
